Disabilities Unlimited

Disabilities Unlimited, a disability advocacy group located in Walker County, has been working on "Disability Parking Signage."  In December 2009, they received word from 10 Wal-Mart stores in the area, with commitment to change disability parking signage to include fine amounts.  
Congratulations Disabilities Unlimited...Job well done!

People First of Alabama

2009 People First of Alabama State Conference was held in Tuscaloosa.  The title of the conference was "Self Advocacy In Action." "You can't just talk the talk...you gotta walk the walk."  Participants provided insight as to what is needed for people with disabilities in Alabama.  Among the ideas were four key thoughts needed for disability advocacy and networking.

Work with other organizations. 
The bigger the numbers the better the outcome.
Advocate for others
Do it together
Work as a team


Clarke County Advocacy Group

Clarke County holds a community advocacy forum discussing the needs and issues of Clarke County. A member of the group, Mr. Alvin Callier from Grovehill attended the ADAPT (American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today) Convention in Atlanta Georgia, advocating for the Community Choice Act and disability rights in the United States.  More information about ADAPT can be found at http://www.adapt.org

Disabilities Unlimited Advocacy Meeting

Disabilities Unlimited, a self advocacy group in Jasper Alabama hosted SPEAK UP: ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF on November 6, 2009Self-advocacy presentation "Become Your Own Best Advocate" was presented by Brenda McComb from ADAP. The meeting included information on the importance of self advocacy as well as the rights of a person with a disability.  The group participated in "real life" situations and the importance of self advocacy.  Members of Disabilities Unlimited offered participants membership to the advocacy group.
